Melatonin

Melatonin contributes to the reduction of time taken to fall asleep. Beneficial effect is obtained by consuming 1 mg of melatonin close to bedtime.

Melatonin also contributes to the alleviation of subjective feelings of jet-lag. Beneficial effect is obtained with a minimum intake of 0.5 mg of melatonin before bedtime on the first day of travel and on the following few days after the arrival at the destination. Melatonin is an endogenous hormone secreted by the pineal gland (epiphysis), and is involved in the regulation and maintenance of the sleep-wake rhythm.

Darkness increases the secretion of melatonin, and light depresses it.

By binding to melatonin receptors in the suprachiasmatic nucleus, melatonin regulates the daily (circadian) biological rhythm, especially during physiological sleep.

With aging, melatonin production decreases.

Melatonin can also be taken for jet lag. It is a condition that occurs due to an imbalance in the body’s natural biological clock, or the circadian rhythm, as a result of changing time zones.

Melatonin intake timing is important.

If we want to reset the biological clock to an earlier time (flight heading east), melatonin should be taken at bedtime local time.

If we want to reset the biological clock to a later time (flight heading west), melatonin should be taken in the morning, that is, a few hours ahead.

Valerian

Valerian promotes calm sleep.

Valerian is also called garden valerian or garden heliotrope. Valerian rhizome and root, used to produce the extracts, contain several major ingredient groups:

sesquiterpenes (valerenic acid, acetoxy valerenic acid, valerenal)

valepotriates (epoxy iridoid esters).

Valerian has a calming effect, and this effect likely results from the action of both groups of compounds – iridoids and sesquiterpenes.
