Saw palmetto

Saw palmetto, Serenoa repens (Bart.) Small. from the Arecaceae family is a low-growing shrubby palm species that grows as a creeping, rarely erect, shrub that can reach the height of 1-2 m.

Mature, olive-sized fruits are harvested and dried for extract production or used fresh for further processing. Its rich composition involves a large number of biological substances belonging to different groups of organic compounds. The main components include fatty acids, plant sterols, essential oil, steroid saponin, flavonoids, polysaccharides.

Although the synergistic action of all components is important for the full activity of the saw palmetto extract, components of the phytosterol groups (β-sitosterol and β-sitosterol 3-O-β-d-glucoside) are considered key.

Saw palmetto extract promotes normal prostate and urinary tract function.
