Milk thistle fruit contributes to normal liver function.
Milk thistle has been used for more than 2000 years. Native to the Mediterranean, milk thistle is cultivated around the world.
Its most famous active substance is silymarin, with the concentration of up to 3% in the fruit.
Silymarin contains a mixture of 4 isomeric flavonolignans, namely silybin, isosilybin, silydianin and silychristin.
Most milk thistle extracts are standardized milk thistle seed preparations that contain 70-80% of silymarin.
Silymarin specifically binds to receptors located in the membrane of hepatocytes, and thus prevents the binding of toxic substances and their accumulation in the liver, so it acts hepatoprotective. Milk thistle also activates enzymes that degrade foreign substances in the liver and captures free radicals on cell and subcellular membranes.
In addition, silymarin increases glutathione levels in the liver, and glutathione is the most important antioxidant for liver protection.
Milk thistle is a very safe herb and can be recommended for long-term use.
Just like milk thistle, artichoke is native to the Mediterranean and has been used for more than 2000 years.
The most important artichoke leaves contain the following active compounds: phenolic acids and their esters (cynarin), sesquiterpene lactones and flavonoids.
In the 20th century Italian scientists isolated cynarin, the main active ingredient of artichoke leaves.
