Marshmallow is a perennial herbaceous plant that can grow up to 150 cm. The aerial part of the plant is greyish-white and covered with hairs. The root of the plant is strong, fusiform and branched.

The whole plant contains mucus, flavonoid heterosides and phenolic acid. In terms of composition, mucus is a polysaccharide consisting of D-galactose, L-rhamnose, D-glucuronic and D-galacturonic acid.
It is because of the mucus content that the root is most often used for extract production, but the leaf and the flower can also be used.
